My work begins, always, with drawing: Ink or pencil on paper, old fashioned and direct. Drawing is a dance across a page, one I love and use to explore, to learn, to experiment, to see and continue to see, see more, see better what is all around making up life and experience of the world. Much of my work comes initially from my many sketchbooks, but just as much is studio work, straightforward work on paper using ink, pencil, watercolor pencils, acrylics, inks, gouache, etc. I often work in series, using a central theme to inspire and collect my ideas and the work. I use both painting materials and techniques and freehand digital color to enhance and finish my drawings. My series include natural creatures, floral designs, still life subjects, landscapes, abstracts, an International collection of work from my travel sketchbooks and a well-known Philadelphia series of famous sites and favorite places. My life's work as a professional artist includes many group and solo exhibitions in the US and in Europe and England. My teaching background is also extensive, focusing on art history and studio art as well as integrated courses with art and children's literature, at the secondary, university, and community levels. I wrote and illustrated 10 published children's books and have a MA degree in the study of Children's Literature. I created and run a successful business of popular prints and cards of Philadelphia and International Travel scenes, from original designs that combine my on-site sketchbook drawings and an innovative use of digital color. I have done works by commission for clients including the Mayor of the 11th Arrondissement in Paris, Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, and many private clients. I currently sell my prints of Paris scenes with the Slow Galerie in Paris. Upcoming shows include a solo show at Rocheville Winery in the Loire Valley, France.
My work is available for Healthcare facilities and Corporate offices, as well as for individual purchase. I accept commissions and am happy to work with special requests.
